DSA Visual Arts Application Timeline: What to Do Each Month

Month-by-month DSA Visual Arts application timeline planning for SOTA and DSA-Sec at Coloury Art Singapore

The hardest part of a visual arts DSA isn't the talent — it's the timing. A portfolio takes months to build, and the application windows open earlier than most parents expect. Here's the year laid out month by month, with the 2026 dates as a reference.

First, two tracks with two different windows

Before the calendar makes sense, know that there are two separate routes for visual arts, and they do not open at the same time:

  • School of the Arts (SOTA) — you apply directly to SOTA, through its own application, which opens earlier.
  • Other secondary schools (DSA-Sec) — you apply through the central DSA-Sec Portal, choosing up to three schools and up to three talent areas.
Read the dates as a guide, not gospel. The months below reflect the 2026 exercise (for Secondary 1 in 2027). MOE and SOTA publish fresh dates every year — always confirm the current cycle at moe.gov.sg/dsa-sec and on the SOTA website.

The year, month by month (2026 reference)

6–12 months before (the year before)
Build foundational skills and start the portfolio. This is when range is developed: observational drawing, colour, composition, and the beginnings of one personal project. Starting here is what makes everything later feel unhurried.
January – February
Lock the portfolio direction and shortlist schools. Match the child's strengths to schools' talent areas, and note that the most competitive open houses often happen before applications open.
March – early May
SOTA direct application window. In 2026 this ran from late March to early May. Have the portfolio, any required videos and reflection pieces finished before the window — not started during it. Attend open houses through April–May.
6 May – 2 June
Central DSA-Sec Portal opens. In 2026 the portal opened on 6 May and closed on 2 June. Apply via Singpass, choosing up to three schools and three talent areas. Everything you submit should already be ready before it opens.
Mid-June – mid-August
Selection activities. Shortlisted students attend auditions, on-site art tasks and interviews. Schools typically notify shortlisted applicants by around early-to-mid July; if you haven't heard from a school by then, your child wasn't shortlisted there. This is the stretch where mock-audition practice pays off.
17 – 28 August
Outcomes released. Schools send results directly — either a Confirmed Offer or a Wait List Offer (which can be upgraded later if others decline).
By late October
Rank your choices. In 2026, families submitted their final school preferences through the DSA-Sec Portal by 23 October. If a child isn't successful, they simply take part in the normal S1 Posting after PSLE results — so a DSA attempt costs nothing to try.

2026 key dates (verify each year)

  • SOTA direct application: late March → early May 2026.
  • DSA-Sec Portal: 6 May → 2 June 2026.
  • Shortlist notifications: around early-to-mid July 2026.
  • Selection activities: mid-June → mid-August 2026.
  • Outcomes: 17 → 28 August 2026.
  • Submit school choices: by 23 October 2026.

The one thing that decides most applications

Look at the calendar again: by the time the portal opens in May, the portfolio already has to be finished. That single fact is why preparation that begins in the application month is almost always too late. The families who do well treat the year before as the real preparation window — and use the official dates above only to confirm deadlines they're already ready for.

If you want help mapping this to your child's starting point, our DSA Visual Arts portfolio preparation programme builds the portfolio and runs mock auditions on exactly this timeline. For portfolio specifics, see our complete SOTA portfolio guide.

❓ Quick Questions

DSA timeline — quick questions

When does the DSA-Sec application open in 2026?

For the 2026 exercise, the central DSA-Sec Portal opened on 6 May 2026 and closed on 2 June 2026. SOTA uses a separate, earlier direct application. Dates change each year, so confirm the current cycle at moe.gov.sg/dsa-sec.

When are DSA-Sec results released?

For 2026, schools released outcomes directly to applicants between 17 and 28 August 2026 — either a Confirmed Offer or a Wait List Offer. Final school choices were then submitted through the portal by late October.

How early should we start preparing for a visual arts DSA?

Because portfolios take time to build, most families start 6 to 12 months before the application window. For SOTA, plan around its earlier direct-application window.
